A little clarity

Questions are
a good place to start.

There is no one-size-fits-all transition. Here are a few things families often want to know.

All your questions, answered
What is an estate sale?

An estate sale is an organized sale of personal property and household contents. It may include furniture, art, tools, collections and everyday belongings, with planning, research and buyer coordination.

Do estate sales only happen after someone dies?

No. Downsizing, assisted-living moves, relocation, separation and preparing a home for sale can all be reasons to consider an estate sale or another household transition service.

What types of items can be sold?

Furniture, art, antiques, collectibles, jewellery, kitchenware, tools, books and many other household items may be suitable. Condition, demand and the practical details of each project help determine the right approach.

How do you determine prices?

We research comparable items, condition and relevant markets. Recommendations are informed estimates, not guarantees of value or proceeds. Qualified specialists may be recommended for unusual pieces.

Can our family choose what is not sold?

Yes. Family priorities come first. We work with the authorized decision-maker to identify items to keep and obtain approval before preparing belongings for sale.

What happens to personal photographs and documents?

Personal photographs, documents and sensitive items are set aside for the family or authorized representative. They are not treated as ordinary sale inventory.

How long does the process take?

Timing depends on the size of the home, the belongings, family decisions and the recommended sale approach. We discuss a practical timeline after the initial consultation and walkthrough.

What happens to items that do not sell?

We discuss approved next steps with you. These may include another sale opportunity, specialist consignment, donation, recycling or cleanout coordination.

Do you purchase the contents directly?

Our service centres on managing the transition and sale process. Direct purchase is not assumed or promised. Any alternative arrangement would need to be discussed and agreed separately.

Do you provide formal appraisals?

We perform market-value research, not certified personal-property appraisals. If a formal appraisal is required, we may recommend a qualified specialist. We do not sell or appraise real estate or provide legal, tax or probate advice.

Does the website accept payments?

No. Marketplace forms are inquiries, not completed purchases or reservations. Auction pages are catalogues, not automated bidding. Availability, sale terms and pickup arrangements must be confirmed by Harbourlight.
